Let's not twist it, though, Boseman does get his own shine in several stand-out moments that he acts the hell out of. Early on, T'Challa's father tells him, "You're a good man with a good heart, and it's hard for a good man to be king. It dovetails into Ryan Coogler's Shakespearean spin on this Marvel superhero.

Coogler weaves in heavy themes of politics and family dynamics and the fallout of diaspora and isolationism vs. inclusion, and he does this smartly and compellingly. I'm not ready to call Killmonger the best Marvel villain yet, because I've got a soft spot for Loki. But observe Killmonger, who was tossed away like garbage and forgotten, and hear what he's saying.

You know what he's doing is super-wack, and yet you can't help but see where he's coming from. The warring philosophies exerted by a raging Killmonger and a pensive T'Challa remind me of what divided Cap and Tony Stark. They're both right. They're both wrong. They both make righteous arguments. The vistas are breathtaking. The world-building is exceptional. The storytelling is rich and emotional and stirring. The score and soundtrack help to drive the plot.

The cast is potent. I've three nags, maybe four. The CG in some of the action bits is shaky. Movie could've sprinkled in more action beats. And we get the usual third act big battle cluster-ef. And Daniel Kaluuya's role is under-served. And those are my nags. Watching this, maybe you'll get woke, maybe not. But you can't help but note how strong the women are in this movie. The Dora Milaje are the truth! Some comic book nerds are bound to get butt-hurt because they'll insist that Wesley Snipes' BLADE is the first respectable treatment given a black superhero.

And, yeah, BLADE deserves its shine. But between BLADE and BLACK PANTHER, which one do you think resonates more on a global scale? Blade is an African-American superhero. T'Challa is an African superhero. It's Marvel, so there's bound to be humor. And the humor is awesome. And feels organic. I've a lot of favorite characters here. My second favorite is M'Baku Winston Duke who just had me rolling in my seat.

But tops, hands down, is the brilliant and joyful and irrepressible Princess Shuri Letitia Wright , T'Challa's little sister and resident tech genius. Shuri sold me on how awesome she is in her early scene with T'Challa in the lab.

And then there's Andy Serkis who proves yet again that he's just as entertaining when not doing motion cap performances.

He's at his most mustache-twirly as Ulysses Klaue, the psycho villain who doesn't give a what. Make sure to stick around for two end-credit stingers. I'm shocked that people who go to Marvel movies still leave the second the end credits start rolling. I rate BLACK PANTHER five out of five shoulder shrugs if you'd seen the movie, you know. To me, BLACK PANTHER is close to a perfect movie. It has stuff to say. It's strong on the culture. It makes you feel a kind of way.

The film was not only a fantastic Marvel superhero story, but it meant so much to people who appreciated it. The movie gets off to a great start with a scene in Oakland, California. Not only that but in the background local rap star Too Short is playing. He was the rich privileged son who was still learning how to rule. He grew up poor in Oakland and then joined the U. military to learn how to become a warrior so that one day he could return to Wakanda and take what he felt was his.

Killmonger wanted to use the wealth and power of his country to free black people around the world in an international revolution and create a Wakandan empire. You could say he was an anti-hero as he wanted to fight for the oppressed. To have an effective movie like this you need a good villain and Killmonger provided that in spades. He stole almost every scene he was in and had one of the great lines when he threatened to serve CIA agent Everett K Ross Martin Freeman to his kids and then laughs and says they are vegetarian.

The importance of the film is on display throughout. First, Wakanda is the most technologically advanced country in the world based upon its vibranium, a rare metal that has special powers. The West has always portrayed Africa as a backwards, impoverished continent full of conflict.

These stereotypes started during the colonial period and exists to the present. The Black Panther reversed all of those images with its portrayal of Wakanda, its people and its civilization. This is one reason why the movie was such an event, because it presented such an inspiring image of an African nation.

The Black Panther also championed African culture. The costumes were amazingly designed and often used real African designs such as the blankets many of the characters wore which come from Lesotho a nation in southern Africa. None of the Wakandan women had straightened hair either. Thus they use all kinds of hair products to straighten it like Europeans have. She ends up throwing it off because she looks so ridiculous in it. Last, the Wakandan language was a real African dialect from South Africa.

Again, these all instilled pride in people. Last, the movie had a series of strong female characters. To have so many leading women especially in a superhero action movie was a rarity. All together this is what made The Black Panther so special.

You had the overturning of centuries of stereotypes with a celebration of Africa, and you had a great supporting cast. HolyJIEbus Reviewed in the United States on February 19, Comic Book Movie Review 8. Jordan Erik Killmonger , Lupita Nyong'o Nakia , Danai Gurira Okoye , Andy Serkis Ulysses Klaue , and Martin Freeman Everett Ross Plot: A man of unknown origin comes to Wakanda for revenge and to change the world.

Can the Black Panther save his own nation and stop Killomnger before it's too late? Review: If you have never read Black Panther comics, don't worry since this movie is standalone movie that also explains who Black Panther is and what Wakanda is. If you are an MCU fan, I would recommend at least watching "Captain America: Civil War" in order to get the background information regarding T'Chaka's fate for this movie.

Coogler masterfully borrows elements from multiple Black Panther comic runs including Don McGregor's run, Christopher Priest's run, and even Reginald Hudlin's run. If you want to know even more about Black Panther and who he is, I recommend checking out those comic runs as they probably are the most influential for this particular movie.

I also loved how Coogler expressed the African-american experience in the US through his depictions of Oakland without a movie based on slavery or an urban drama and gave that a experience a different outlet of expression in an interesting and dynamic way. This movie was truly inventive in the way it expressed its message, and delivered that message in a powerful way.

Boseman plays the noble King of Wakanda with class, but also shows how can be an authentic brother to Letitia Wright's Shuri. I never once thought T'Chala and Shuri were not syblings as they delivered their performances perfectly to show how siblings would normally act around one another.

Jordan's Killmonger was also great and there was a scene that paid tribute to Jungle Action 6, which I totally geeked out over. His performance was a marvel for me as he played a bad man, but also made you emphatic to him due to his outstanding performance.

He was both a villain that you loved to hate, but was heartbroken when you learned about his motivations. The real standout to me was Gurira's dutiful Okoye. I read Priest's interpretation of Okoye and Nakia during the 90's and Coogler's versions were very different in this movie, but I thought each character worked for the movie's story and set of circumstances. Okoye played a vicious general, but also knew how to show vulnerability and emotion when she needed to and for me stole every scene she was in.

The whole cast was also great and for the most part gave very convincing performances and I felt this movie had one of the best scripts out of the MCU movies.

However, it is not a perfect movie as it had its fair share of problems. W'Kabi is supposed to be T'Chala's best friend in this movie, but for some reason and out of nowhere, due to ONE mistake, I felt W'Kabi reacted rather harshly and unfairly to T'Chala.

For the most part this movie had great special effects, but the last act had some scenes where I could clearly see the actors were acting in front of a green screen and on a stage, which took me out of the movie. Also, this might be a drawback because I am a Korean, but all of the actors that spoke Korean even the Koreans whoever were in Korea!

had terrible accents! I actually caught myself giggling a few times because the Korean was so bad! I also could've used a few more action scenes in the movie, but the action scenes that were shown in this movie were amazing especially the ones that took place in Busan, South Korea. Despite its flaws, this movie stands up there as one of my top 10 MCU movies as of now.

I highly recommend it for MCU fans and comic book fans everywhere. mscedrob Reviewed in the United States on August 15, One of our favorites to watch as a family and community.

Write a customer review. Sorted by: Top reviews Top reviews Most recent. Bala Reviewed in the United States on February 17, No spoilers until the very last sentence. I keep adding to my list of top three movies in the MCU. I think I now have six in my top three, which I know is some wiggy math. BLACK PANTHER is now in that top three. In a sort of way, BLACK PANTHER is the WONDER WOMAN of It's a seminal film, and barrier-breaking, and it's going to make bank, and it's going to make waves.

I'd never before gone to a am showing on a Friday where every dang seat in the theater was packed, and the room was buzzing like crazy. The movie posits that the lost city of El Dorado, its streets paved with gold, is real. Only, it's not anywhere in South America. Nestled in deepest Africa, safeguarded by its boundaries of tall mountain ranges and impenetrable rain forests, the secretive, isolationist nation of Wakanda projects its image of third world penury. If only the rest of the world had a clue that Wakanda is home to vibranium, that rarest metal Ready access to vibranium has rendered Wakanda the richest and most technologically-advanced country in the world - but only they know this.

BLACK PANTHER takes place one week after the death of T'Challa's father, King T'Chaka, and the apprehension of his killer. So, now, we see T'Challa attempt to follow his revered father's footsteps. But, wait, do you want to know how great this movie is?

It's so great that T'Challa himself, during huge chunks of the movie, is relegated to side character status. It's a powerful ensemble of actors that breathe vivid life into a whole new set of characters, most of whom take turns hijacking the scene.

Chadwick Boseman doesn't mind. He'd already showed his chops in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Going into BLACK PANTHER, we're already convinced of how cool and regal and badass T'Challa is, of how he could be this relentless force. Here, I equate Boseman's performance to John Wayne's in most of Wayne's movies.

I've said many times that John Wayne is a great re-actor, and Boseman does same as a chill and restrained T'Challa rubs elbows with a multitude of very colorful personalities. Let's not twist it, though, Boseman does get his own shine in several stand-out moments that he acts the hell out of.
